Bombardier Omneo and Omneo Premium – SNCF Regio 2N

Latest update 13.01.2021

The essentials
Manufacturer: Bombardier
Production period: 2012 – present
Product profile: Suburban/regional/intercity electric multiple unit, partially double-deck
Number ordered: 447
Main tech specs: 160 or 200 km/h, 2.4-3.2 MW, 80.9 to 135.3 meter
Introduction
Since the start of Bombardier Omneo electric multiple units (EMU) production and deliveries, there has been much news related to the call-offs to the large frame contract that SNCF signed with the manufacturers. We have brought you many of them. Now is the time to look at the variations, orders, and deliveries from a broader perspective.

The increased traffic on regional routes across France made SNCF shout for EMUs that would fulfill the hunger for high-capacity passenger transport along with fleet unification across the network. Bombardier’s response was Omneo: a double-deck modular trainset that would meet requirements of commuter and intercity transport. Developed in 2010, pre-production started in 2012 and with serial production one year later, these units are assembled in the Crespin facility of Bombardier in France.

Despite the fact that bodies welding is executed in the Czech plant of Bombardier in Česká Lípa, the amount of work and supplies have done locally has been rewarded with Guaranteed French Origin label, as the first in the rail industry. Bombardier also prides in the recycling rate of these units reaching 95%. SNCF has signed an agreement with Bombardier for a frame contract of 860 units in 2010. In 2020, we have reached half the number of actually ordered trains. Now let’s have a look at its variations:

Modularity
The orders vary from region to region, fully utilizing the modular concept of this train. Omneo trains come in 5 sizes:

Short (C): 6 cars (80.9 or 82.6 m) – Cm is also used, meaning the train is equipped with a pantograph adapted for Caténaire midi
Medium (M): 7 cars (94.9 m)
Long (L): 8 cars (109.9 m)
Extra-long (XL): 10 cars (135.3 m)

The variability of use is also displayed in the product name:

Omneo for suburban / regional trains (these units are called Regio 2N by SNCF)
Omneo Premium for intercity trains
Number batches in use (follow the SNCF number scheme)
